Simon Belshaw has studied composition with Gavin Bryars, Andy Hugill and Philip Grange and gained a PhD from the University of Hertfordshire in 2005 for his research into Generative Systems and Disruptive Processes in Musical Composition.
He has had pieces performed by the Schidlof Quartet, PM Ensemble, Gemini and Double Image (amongst others) as well as providing music for video and television.
The Belshaw Band was formed to play the music of Simon Belshaw. The music is repetitive and minimalist, influenced by composers such as Glass, Reich and Nyman. The project has involved a number of players (including Will Gregory and Mat Sibley) and performances in a variety of venues (pubs, restaurants, theatres and, on three occasions, at the Bristol Community Festival at Ashton Court). The band has ranged in size from an ensemble of five players to one of fourteen and involved a number of combinations of instruments.
